GAME SUMMARY

Voyager Academy Volleyball team lost at home against conference opponent Franklin Academy by a score of 3 - 2 Sets (25 - 21; 25 - 14; 27 - 29; 15 - 25; 8 - 15).

One thing is certain for the Voyager Vikings, this season will definitely be a challenge.  This fact became very apparent during Wednesday night's game.  Needing only one point to sweep the Lady Patriots off the floor in straight sets and head home victorious, the Lady Vikings service miscue plague once again surfaced costing the team yet another win.  To add insult to injury - no pun intended, the Vikings also received painful news before the game started they'll most likely be without the services of Sophomore Middle Blocker Kiera DeGroat (back injury) for the remainder of the season.

If their is a silver lining from the team's disappointing five set lost to Franklin Academy in front their home fans, the youthful Lady Vikings hopefully learned a few valuable lessons to carry them for the remainder of the season: a) When you have a team down, you have to take them out; b) Momentum is quite fickle.  "Ole Mo" can turn on a dime, and once gone it can be extremely difficult to regain;  c) You can't give away points to good teams and expect to win.

After getting much deserved rest since their last outing, Voyager came out the blocks in Set 1 scrapping against their conference foe.  With the score tied at 12 - 12, the Vikings began swinging from all directions with #7 Katie McLamb (Fr), #12 Summer Matthews (Fr), and #2 Kamryn Boyce (Jr) leading the charge.  Voyager's high voltage pressure offense consistently befuddled the clearly rattled Lady Patriots as the Vikings took full control and tightly capped the first set.  Voyager kept up the intensity on Franklin's army in Set 2, convincingly hammering their visibly buckled foe to submission.

The Vikings lapsed early in Set 3 committing numerous unforced errors to allow their opponent to reclaim their previously wobbly legs and take a five point edge.  The Patriot lead persisted until near the end of the set as the Vikings found themselves down 24 - 20.  On cue, #4 Caitlin Leggett (Sr), aka "The Beast" emerged to reel off four consecutive service points helping the team to even the set score at 24 - 24.  From their the lead changed hands between the two perennial powers until Voyager seized the lead and a game point opportunity to slam the door completely at 27 - 26.  Ever the gracious host, the Vikings delivered an errant serve gift to their visiting challenger, thus addressing the aforementioned (a, b, & c lessons) enlightenment bestowed upon our resident young & gifted scholar athletes.

Lacking the torrent fight typically associated with the Vikings, and "Ole Mo" firmly in the hands of Franklin's resurgent troops, Sets 4 and 5 belonged to the Lady Patriots.  Voyager's free swinging exuberance faded relegated to mostly free balls, out-of-sync ball movement, accompanied by more service and unforced errors.  The deterred and scorched Viking battalion could only grimace as they exited their home court wishing they had sealed the deal when they had their chance.

"Players of the Game" Senior Libero #22 Zarria Bratts (13 digs) and MB/MH Kamryn Boyce (6 kills, 8 blocks) were aided by yeomen efforts delivered by Caitlin Leggett (4 kills, 23 digs), Katie McLamb (6 kills, 22 digs), and the supporting cast of #15 Stacey Oxendine (Sr), #11 Alyssa Greene (Sr), #5 Ashlyn Annis (So), #9 Ellie Stockton (Jr), and Summer Matthews (5 kills).  Junior Setters #16 Briggs Rose (Jr) and #3 Kaley Stone (Jr) combined for 24 assists commandeering the Viking ship.

Voyager's head Coach Steve DeLuca commented. "We had this one and let it slip away.  Our ladies are learning from every game, and tomorrow's another day.  We'll be much better prepared when we see them again down the road."

Voyager Academy (5 - 5 record) clash with Riverside High School on Thursday, 9/7/17.  Game time is 6 pm.
