Voyager Academy Volleyball team lost on the road against conference newcomer Vance Charter School by a score of 3 - 0 Sets (18 - 25; 20 - 25; 19 - 25).
The season's rollercoaster ride continued for the Lady Vikings as the young guns of Vikings Nation learned another valuable lesson -- never take your opponent lightly. Voyager's youthful ones stepped into the Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson, NC on Wednesday evening without their required daily dosage of vitamin pills finding an inspired Lady Knights team who are new to the conference and hungry for a victory. With their A-game left behind at HQ, along with their energy supplements, the Vikings found themselves unable to flick the light switch on at their leisure as they've been able to often do in the past.
The Lady Vikings quietly jumped out to an early Set 1 lead then practically gave it away missing multiple serves and offering less than stellar play against their opportunistic opponent. The Knights began gaining more and more confidence with each Viking unforced error subsequently seizing the lead at a 10 - 9 score. Voyager's scant defenses found itself fully infiltrated by the host team who took full advantage of each and every opportunity to wreck havoc on the rapidly sinking Viking ship. The first set ended at 25 - 18.
Unable to get untracked offensively due to a stalled engine, nor gain any wind in the sail, Set 2 brought forth more misery for the Voyager troubadours. The Vikings brain trust and crew were never able to secure a lead in the set, finally succumbing to Knights' command at 25 - 20.
As the Viking faithful watched in dismay from the stands hoping for the infamous Voya rallying cry, the 3rd Set finally brought forth a glimmer of hope as Voyager tied the game score at 6 - 6 a piece. Those hopes were all but dashed on the next play when Senior #4 Caitlin Leggett (4 kills, 23 digs) rose for a block only to come down on her teammates left foot tweaking her right ankle along with the hopes of the team and Viking Nation. Remaining in the game for as long as she could but visibly laboring and in agony, the gutsy team Captain went on a four point service run to help Voyager capture a 14 - 9 lead. The Vikings struggled mightily to sustain steam and generate points after her departure ultimately relinquishing the lead to the Lady Knights in the process, and conceding checkmate in straight sets.
Voyager "Player of the Game" #5 Ashlyn Annis (So) pitched-in with 5 kills, 6 digs, 5 service points, while Freshman #7 Katie McLamb canned 7 kills, 14 digs. Seniors #22 Zarria Bratts and #15 Stacey Oxendine combined for 21 digs, joined by Junior dual Setters #3 Kaley Stone (Jr) and #14 Briggs Rose who handed out 16 assists between them. Other team contributors included
#2 Kamryn Boyce (Jr), #11 Alyssa Greene (Sr), #9 Ellie Stockton (Jr), and #12 Summer Matthews (Fr) who between them tallied 6 kills and 4 digs.
After the game Voyager head Coach Steve DeLuca noted. "Our team can perform much better than they did tonight. They're still learning how to be more consistent in their effort and to win."
Voyager Academy (6 - 7 record, 2 - 3 conference) take to the road again to lock talons with Oxford Prep on Monday, 9/18/17. Game time is 6 pm.
