Voyager Academy Volleyball team won on the road against conference opponent East Wake Academy by a score of 3-1 Sets (25-22; 17-25; 29-27; 25-21).
Well, the Lady Vikings did it again. The infamous "Cardiac Crew" found another way to win. This time doing it at the Eagles Nest in Zebulon, NC. Voyager gained the season series sweep from the EWA Lady Eagles in typical Viking style. Fresh off of two similar squeaker games the previous week, the team upheld its consistent MO, "Let's make it close and keep it interesting".
Voyager grabbed and held an early three point lead in Set 1 only to relinquish it at 16-17. The Lady Vikings subsequently went on a four point run to build the lead back to three at 20-17, then held on to closeout the set 25-22. Set 2 offered a different story as the Lady Eagles spread their wings and soared past the Lady Viking's overheated engine 17-25. The working formula continued throughout most of the third set as East Wake built a 22-16 lead on the verge to a commanding 2 sets to 1 margin on the Vikings.
In true Voyager fashion, the unphased rarely one to panic Vikings hit the "On" switch. After taking a mid-court pass near the net on the left side, Senior Captain #4 Caitlin Leggett (9 kills) leaped and dumped a perfectly place left-handed tap shot between two Lady Eagles causing them to collide and misplay the ball earning the Vikings a much needed point. With the spark that ignited the ship's high octane engine at hand, Senior #15 Stacey Oxendine (14 digs) stepped to the service line and proceeded to fire off five consecutive service points including three cruise missile aces to even the game score at 22-22. Voyager's ship had finally regained some fuel.
The now stunned East Wake ladies valiantly took the next two points to place themselves ahead at set point only to have two Right Side hitter attacks go array. Senior #22 Zarria Bratts (28 digs) then stepped to the service line and catapulted a serve that the Lady Eagle receiver errantly hit toward the middle of the net into the waiting chops of Freshman #7 Katie McLamb (7 kills, 8 blocks) who laid down the hammer for the point. The very next two serves saw outside hitter Sophomore #5 Ashlyn Annis (9 kills) crush two attack kills cross-court for winners. McLamb then capped off the set with a middle block to give the Vikings the lead as the Lady Eagles clearly frustrated by Voyager's gritty play and solid defense misfired several more times ending the set in the Viking's favor 29-27.
The Lady Vikings regained control of the match in Set 4 capturing the visibly shaken bird of prey by a score of 25-21. Junior Setters #3 Kaley Stone and #16 Briggs Rose combined for 24 assists and 27 service points. Aided by crew members Junior #2 Kamryn Boyce (5 blocks), Senior #11 Alyssa Greene (2 kills, 7 digs), and Freshman #12 Summer Matthews (4 blocks), the Lady Vikings secured the victory and headed home singing the popular tune, "This is how we do it".
Voyager's head Coach Steve DeLuca noted. "I've continually said this team has no quit in them, and will battle to the very end against any team they face. We're proud of them and elated to have the win."
