Voyager Academy Volleyball team lost Wednesday's away match against conference rival Roxboro Community High School by a score of 3-0 Sets (18-25; 17-25; 24-26).
The Lady Vikings had been waiting to gain revenge against their nemesis Roxboro Community School ever since their first matchup earlier this season. Knowing they had RCS on the ropes before at home but lacked enough healthy bodies and experience then to take them down, this time seemed much different. The team had all its horses back with Sophomore #14 Kiera Degroat (13 digs) finally in uniform and able to play. Although not totally 100% and relegated to playing only in various back row defensive positions -- doctors orders, at least she was on the floor contributing to the team for extended periods of the game.
DeGroat's presence on the floor alone did help but the final results remained the same as the two team's first meeting. However this time Voyager grabbed the bull (in this case Lady Bulldogs from Roxboro CS) by its horns from the onset, and tangled with the spirited demon to the very end. And, quite frankly, had them on the ropes again.
In Set 1, Voyager came out punching briefly taking the lead at various times. The Vikings kept their opponent within radar range (2-3 points) throughout the set, ready to initiate an all out assault when the proper time presented itself. Only problem was the tracking device faltered as Roxboro closed out the set 25-18. Set 2 delivered a repeat performance as the Vikings yielded at 25-17. In each set, Voyager would capture a lead then lose ground once the Vikings made rotation changes that proved pivitol for Roxboro to gain advantage.
Set 3 found Roxboro, the undefeated one in the conference and #2 ranked NC Class 1 team in the state, hanging on for dear life as the ever determined Vikings took the fight to another level. Voyager continued to pound away throughout the set finding themselves needing only one point at 24-23 to closeout Set 3. Unfortunately, the Lady Vikings effort to deliver the knockout punch when given the opportunities dematerialized, and not necessarily due to their opponent's prowess, letting the "big dog" off the hook 26-24 to end the set and match.
Freshman #7 Katie McLamb (10 kills, 11 digs) was selected Voyager "Player of the Game". Senior #4 Caitlin Leggett and Sophomore #5 Ashlyn Annis combined for 10 kills & 25 digs, while troopers Seniors'#22 Zarria Bratts, #15 Stacey Oxendine, and #11 Alyssa Greene, along with Juniors' Kamryn Boyce, #10 Halley Koch, and Freshman #12 Summer Matthews all contributed in the full frontal team effort. Junior Setters Briggs Rose and Kaley Stone steered the ship handing out 24 assists in the game.
Voyager's head Coach Steve DeLuca commented post-game. "We wanted this one of course, and our ladies gave a good effort. Roxboro knows they were in a real battle against our team."
Voyager Academy (9-9 record; 4-5 conference) face host Franklin Academy next on Monday, 10/2/17. Game time is 6 pm.
