Voyager Volleyball team shocked host Northern High School winning 3 - 2 Sets (25 - 22; 25 - 23; 10 - 25; 26 - 28; 15 -10) in a 3-hour non-conference marathon.
Pitted against a 4A behemoth (now realigned to 3A) for their season debut, the diminutive in stature by comparison Lady Vikings played the role of giant killers slaying their foe before a stunned Northern H. S. home crowd. Voyager used team speed, agility and all out hustle to overcome the size differential pulling off what many considered a monumental feat.
VAHS came out swinging in the match refusing to back down or be intimidated as they captured an early lead they never relinquished in the set. The two teams went toe-to-toe trading blows throughout but with the score tied 18 - 18, Voyager went on a 7 - 2 tear to closeout the set.
With momentum on their side the Lady Vikings reeled off six points to start Set 2. However, their lead gradually evaporated as the Lady Knights finally worked their way back even at 23 - 23 towards the end of the set. Voyager once again conjured their winning formula to eke out the last two consecutive points to take Set 2. Undaunted by being down two sets, Northern stormed out in Set 3 firing on all cylinders to easily overtake the seemingly weary Vikings setting the stage for an epic fourth set. On the brink of victory, the Lady Vikings garnered a commanding lead only to once again find themselves unable to hold off the Lady Knights' charge as Northern claimed the fourth set 28 - 26 to even the match
As both teams clawed their way through the exhausting winner-take-all fifth set spine thriller, the Lady Vikings grasped one last breathe of true grit tied at 8 - 8, then used sheer determination to seize the victory by a score of 15 - 10.
The Vikings were lead by Sophomore Sensation #14 Kiera DeGroat (MB), Fab Freshman #7 Katie McLamb (OH), Senior Captain #4 Caitlin Leggett (OH), and defensive specialist Senior #20 Stacey Oxendine (Libero). The team's potent attack was sparked by the play of Voyager's dual Setter combo Juniors' #16 Briggs Rose and #3 Kaley Stone who kept the offense in high gear for most of the match. Voyager's key game stats (serves, attacks & digs) each exceeded 80 percent, well above the national average and vital to a team's overall success.
Voyager's head Coach Steve DeLuca beamed after the game, "Our coaching staff and fans are ever so proud of our Ladies. This was a total team effort with everyone contributing. We have a very young team with exceptional senior leadership. Our young players (Kiera & Katie) shined brightly today and were simply awesome. As a team we showed that when we pass and have solid ball control we are very tough to beat. As this team jells together throughout the season as we expect, we will do very well"
The Lady Vikings will face Northern again for its home opener on Wednesday, 8/16/17. Game time for the must see rematch is 6 pm.
