|Vance Charter School||52|
Playing before a pack Senior Night crowd, Voyager Academy won in a come-from-behind overtime thriller against Vance Charter School by a score of 58-52.
Tuesday's home conference game was one for the ages as four Lady Vikings' seniors took final curtain bows on their home court. Senior floor leaders Stacey Oxendine and Anna Teer Barringer were joined by senior teammates Caitlin Leggett and Niyah Taylor for the opening tip-off. In a gracious gesture to recognize the seniors agreed upon by both teams coaches, Leggett leaped high to push the opening tap to Taylor who then turned and tossed the ball to an injured right arm in a sling Barringer. Barringer caught the ball with her left hand and in one motion scored the opening basket with a layup bringing the elated crowd to their feet.
Barringer was allowed to exit the court without any harm through player substitution after a planned coaches timeout. With the opening orchestration out of the way, the Lady Knights proceeded to take a narrow four point lead early, then carried a 26-18 cushion into the locker room at halftime. By end of the third quarter the margin had ballooned to 42-27. That's when the incredible happened.
Seemingly out from the abyss using a stifling box and one defense and clutch shooting lead by Sophomore duo Carlise Nelson and DeAsia Parker, the Vikings erased the virtually insurmountable fifteen point deficit. With 1.9 seconds remaining in the game, Stacey Oxendine caught an in-bound pass on the right side of the lane, then turned, released and swished the "Shot of the Century" at the buzzer with two defenders in her face. The nothing but net basket tied the game at the end of regulation sending the Vikings players and fans into a frenzy. The Vikings had incredibly outscored their opponent 25-10 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime where they would ultimately prevail in the memorable game befitting for only "Senior Night" at Voyager Academy.
