Voyager's State Playoff run ends in overtime shootout thriller

Game Date
Nov 8, 2016

Voyager Academy Mens Soccer team lost in a overtime shootout thriller to #3 Seed Hobbton High School by a score of 1 - 1 (3 - 4) in the 2nd Round of the NCHSAA 1A State Playoffs on Tue, 11/8/16.

VAHS battled the highly ranked Hobbton Wildcats to a 0-0 draw at the intermission, even though both teams had multiple opportunities to score but couldn’t convert.  Voyager's defensive breakdown in the 75th minute of the regulation period gave Hobbton the lead 1-0 with 5 minutes remaining in the game.

Voyager continued to press and their determination paid off, when #1 Spencer Chwalik drilled home the equalizer on an assist from #21 Jacob McGhinnis with just over 2 minutes left in regulation. Both teams fought hard through 30 minutes of the scoreless overtime to bring the result down to penalty kicks.  Voyagers' #14 Mason Kosik, #16 Caleb Futrell, and #10 Cole Scarantino banged home penalty shots, however Hobbton converted one more shot than Voyager to seal the win, and dash the Vikings' hopes of advancing to the Sweet 16.

Congratulations to the entire team and Coaches for a great effort throughout the season and State Playoffs!!
